Misty Sol Will Turn Parking Meters Into Murals on 52st

Misty Sol (ACG '13, '11, '07, '06) is one of seven artist chosen by the Enterprise Center Community Development Corporation (TEC-CDC) to turn parking meters into murals along the 52nd Street commercial corridor in West Philadelphia. Designed to engage community members and businesses in the revitalization efforts taking place along this key corridor, the place making project represents a creative solution to addressing blight in the form of aging parking meters. Other artists include: Nile Livingston, Monna T. Morton, David Proch, Isa Richardson, Amy Lynne Scheidegger, Brian Taylor (B Nothin), and Terrance Woolford. This summer, as part of TEC-CDC’s ongoing efforts to spark community renewal and encourage residents and local business owners to become further invested in the growth of the 52nd Street Corridor, the organization launched the 52nd Street Parking Meter Mural Art Project. TEC-CDC partnered with Small But Mighty Arts, who was charged with putting the call out for local artists, then vetting and selecting the winners. TEC-CDC proposes to paint 56 meters along 52nd Street between Arch Street and Walnut Street, and around the 52nd Street Market Frankford Line SEPTA station. Beginning October 2015, TEC-CDC and the artists will engage West Philadelphia schools, community groups, and businesses in the initial design of the parking meter art. Each group will be given the scope of the project along with the opportunity to participate by submitting their own design concepts via blank parking meter templates. The artists will then use the community meter design submissions as inspiration for a set of parking meter designs that highlight the community and pull from its rich history. The other meters that make up the project will be painted to reflect the 52nd Street logo and bring uniformity to the project design. By late-October 2015, the artists will commence painting. TEC-CDC anticipates project completion by November 2015.Artwork in West Philadelphia’s 52nd Street Corridor
