The Voices Project
June 7, 2012
Last night at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, a group of young people performed an original script based on narratives, stories, and poems collected through a series of writing workshops and interviews with teens and young adults that have dropped out of school or have been adjudicated. This Voices Project was generously funded through the Leeway Foundation. I was one of the artists chosen to receive the Art and Change grant in the fall of 2011. It allowed me the opportunity provide a unique portrayal of this population through the eyes of the students. Wednesday, June 6, 2012 was a night for Philadelphia to hear the voices of those that are usually silenced.
The following organizations provided space and participants over the last six months: E3 North, St. Gabe, and E3 Girard.

The topics in the script ranged from teen pregnancy, stories describing the day each of them were born, and goals and dreams each of them had after achieving their GED or high school diploma. The words were lifted from the writing produced during the workshops, and two of the actors were from St. Gabe (Chris Colon and Kareem Williams). The performance will have a repeat performance in August at St. Michael's Lutheran Church located at 6671 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia, PA.
