Michelle Angela Ortiz Presents Her Documentary

Visual Artist, Michelle Angela Ortiz (ACG '19 ’13, ’12, ’05, WOO '17, LTA '08), will be screening her short documentary, "Las Madres de Berks", as part of her "Familias Separadas" public art project, which amplifies the stories of families affected by detention and deportation in Pennsylvania. This event will take place May 9 at 5:30pm - 7:30pm (Mother’s Day Tribute) at The Pennsylvania Immigration and Citizenship Coalition (2100 Arch Street, 4th Floor Philadelphia, PA 19103).

Las Madres de Berks documentary shares the testimonials of four mothers that were detained for two years with their children at the Berks County Residential Center, a family prison in Pennsylvania. The documentary also features the artworks that Ortiz created based on the Berks mother's stories that were unveiled in Harrisburg during a statewide action against family detention.

The Pennsylvania Immigration and Citizenship Coalition (PICC) is a diverse coalition of over 50 member organizations and hundreds of individual supporters. Our membership includes community groups, social, health and legal service providers, advocacy organizations, labor unions, and faith communities. PICC plays a unique role as the only organization in Pennsylvania that brings together organizations and individuals representing different ethnicities, immigration statuses, faiths, and other backgrounds, to work collectively on immigrant rights in Pennsylvania.
