Leeway Foundation Announces March 2014 Art and Change Grantees

The Leeway Foundation announces today $35,000 in grants to 14 women and trans* artists and cultural producers living in the five-county Philadelphia area to further their work integrating a variety of arts disciplines and social change.

The Art and Change Grant provides project-based grants of up to $2,500 to women and transgender (which includes those who identify as trans* and genderqueer) artists and cultural producers who: have art and social change projects or opportunities that impact a larger group, audience or community; have financial need; and live in the Delaware Valley area. The grant supports artists working in a variety of fields including performance, visual arts, and literary arts.

Out of 56 applicants, the following 14 artists were awarded $2,500 (in alphabetical order):

  • Leila, Performance/Literary Arts, Fairmount
  • Leticia Roa Nixon, Folk Arts/Media Arts, South Philadelphia
  • M. Nzadi Keita, Literary Arts, Germantown
  • Martha McDonald, Performance/Visual Arts, South Philadelphia
  • Tatiana Bacchus, Media Arts, Lower Makefield Township
  • Tayarisha Poe, Media Arts/Visual Arts, West Philadelphia
  • Tokay Tomah, Music, Upper Darby      
  • Voyager, Literary Arts, West Philadelphia

 

Art and Change Grants are distributed twice per year and evaluated by an independent peer review panel.  The March 2014 review panel consisted of writer, A. Naomi Jackson; curator and cultural producer, Amy Sadao; and mediamaker, Deborah Rudman.

The March deadline was the first cycle for 2014. Applications are made available on the Leeway website and outreach events are held throughout the year. The next Art and Change Grant deadline is August 1, 2014.

*We use the term “trans” in its most inclusive sense, as an umbrella term encompassing transsexual, transgender, genderqueer, Two-Spirit people, and more generally, anyone whose gender identity or gender expression is nonconforming and/or different from their gender assigned at birth.
