"And this is how you become a citizen..." Exhibition
Curated by Maria Dumlao (ACG '17), this exhibition brings together three artists – Michelle Angela Ortiz (LTA ’08, ACG ’13, ’12, ’05), Chet Pancake (LTA '17, WOO '17, ACG '16) and Imani Roach – whose work reflects on gendered citizenship, family, identity, and belonging.
The title, “And this is how you are a citizen…” is a line from Claudia Rankine’s book-length poem, “Citizen, An American Lyric.” In it, she “pull[s] the lyric back into its realities;” the realities of how and what it feels and means to be a black citizen in the everyday acts of racism in our contemporary “post-race” society. Borrowing from Rankine’s lyricism as an individual and part of a collective group of citizens, the exhibit examines one's ability to speak, perform, and stay alive in the midst of adversity. Each of the three artists poetize one’s relationship to a place and one’s connection to history with its inherited trauma.
