My artmaking ranges from artist's books to ceramic sculpture, but it is site-specific installations which bring together the spatial, psychological and historic contexts in which I can explore my ethnic identity. Dating to 1984, my first installations involved audiences in the sole perceptual experience of a space. As I found my voice within this genre, my installations evolved to specifically examine the conflicts of my hybrid Chinese American identity and, by extension, to call into question similar conflicts shared by other Asian Americans.

The breadth of my installations has grown to encompass aspects of public art and community collaborations as a way to provide a wider social context for my artmaking. Recent installations now purposefully contemplate the influence of Asian cultures in America as their very presence transforms, redefines and expands our vision of American culture.
