Marina Murayama Nir

Marina Murayama’s songs explore themes of liminality and reconciliation. We bridge the ancient with the modern using materials synthesized and organic. We seek to imagine and (re)build indigenous, mixed identity through collage, soundscapes, and dance beats. Marina Murayama performs in a variety of settings including educational institutions, museums, film festivals, graveyards, and more. Most recently, Marina performed an original song with the Philadelphia Orchestra for the program, Our City, Your Orchestra. Outside of composing and performing their own work, Marina teaches high school music with the School District of Philadelphia, spending a large portion of their time building drumline programs. Currently Marina is composing a set of songs for Lofi Orchestra - string orchestra combined with DJ'ing and lofi beat making.

Marina Murayama Nir will develop "Lofi Orchestra", a set of compositions for beginner musicians to create and perform in an orchestral setting, combining elements of beat making, DJ'ing, keyboards, and strings. With cultural relevance and accessibility at its heart, "Lofi Orchestra" seeks to provide a new avenue for Philly youth to create through music in which they relate.
