Maia will develop the Sixth of the Month Project (SMP). The project will culminate into a photography and audio installation exhibiting the experiences of six to eight at-risk women (ages 14-25) and their birthing stories. This project aims to highlight the art of the child birthing process. Participants in the project will receive free doula services, participate in a photo shoot, and tell their stories of labor and delivery while audio recorded. Childbirth in the eyes of many cultures is a right of passage, a sacred act or a holy art form that houses the strength of the feminine spirit. Sadly, most modern western practices for childbirth treat childbirth as an illness or surgical procedure, rather than as a celebrated natural experience for a women. The SMP will tell stories of mothers, inform others, challenge the way we view natural labor and will restore the idea that there is an art to giving birth.
