Through theatre, storytelling, and historical reenactment, Joann will create a program on African-American history to youth ages 11-18 in her community. This eight-week program will focus on the accomplishments of civil rights activists such as Harriet Tubman, Fredrick Douglas, Harriet Beecher-Stowe, the Colored Soldiers of Camp William Penn, and Lucretia Mott, and present other reenactment theatre from the 18th and 19th centuries. Through the project, participants will be made aware of the historical contributions of African-Americans in Philadelphia and Montgomery Country, specifically in the communities La Mott and Glenside. Additionally, youth will learn dialogues and acting techniques from professional actors and historians, and perform their work in the La Mott community.
