jackie soro 2024

Jackie Soro

Jackie Soro (she/they) is an artist and performer based in Philadelphia (Lenapehoking). She is deeply rooted in Philadelphia's arts community and is dedicated to creating safer spaces & wider stages for queer performers like herself. Jackie’s solo & collaborative works are playfully irreverent and improvisatory, and have appeared on many stages (Ars Nova, LaMama ETC, FringeArts, Christchurch Neighborhood House, Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Wilma Theater, and DIY venues across Philadelphia).

Jackie works in collaboration with local artists and theaters to build immersive, temporary worlds in the form of visually rich performances that invite audiences to laugh, sing, cry, and engage with big questions: What burdens do each of us carry, and how do we contain it all? What is community & how do we build it? How can we live thoughtfully & joyfully on a burning planet? How do we open ourselves to change? Jackie’s work has been supported by residencies at Subcircle (ME), Resonant Motion Inc. (NYC) and Bearded Ladies Cabaret (PHL) and their ensemble work has garnered three Barrymore Awards.

Jackie has mentored young artists & musicians in leadership positions at Girls Rock Philly, Shakespeare in Clark Park, and more. Jackie is a recipient of a 2024 Independence Foundation Fellowship in the Arts.

In this multidisciplinary fiber arts and community gardening project, Ro Adler, Jackie Soro, and Nicole Dupree, a team of artists who steward Farm 51, a community and garden space, will work with indigo from seed to textile. They will grow indigo, extract pigment, start a fermentation vat, and host a day-long gathering with neighbors where they will share food, learn about indigo’s complex history, sing to the vat, and dye textiles, documenting and sharing the process widely through a PhillyCAM TV program. The team will also create learning resources for indigo projects in other green spaces and creative communities, in Philly and beyond.
