J. and Maia have developed the Empowered Thru Sound (ETS) program to organize and film a group of young women who will learn audio production and deejaying skills. As women of color immersed in hip-hop culture, they will create a feminist model to encourage young women to think critically and become socially conscious artists, using their newly acquired skills for social change. By working with young women, J. and Maia want to instill and further the self-esteem and confidence of young women interested in these art forms. Through community viewings of the resulting film that documents the young women in the program, they will engage a larger community and shift how the public views women in the music industry.
