Workshop on AAPI Feminism with Spoken Word Artist Michelle Myers

Michelle Myers (LTA '14, ACG '11) will facilitate, Girls Make Better Ninjas (Or I can't be angry, I'm Asian): An exploratory workshop on AAPI feminism, a free workshop at the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival (PAAFF). This workshop will be held at 12:00pm on Saturday, November 21 at the Asian Arts Initiative (1219 Vine Street, Philadelphia, PA), and will be followed by free screenings of several short films showcasing women’s issues.

In this workshop, participants will be invited to engage in an open discussion about the viability of an Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) feminist space. Participants will be asked to determine a working definition of AAPI feminism and identify the needs that it would address, including intersectional issues that further complicate gender equality and access (race, culture, economics/class, education, language, intergenerational issues, sexual identity, media, etc). Through small group activities and large group discussion, participants will begin the process of claiming space for an active approach to AAPI feminism, and propose ways to promote its continued development.  The workshop will consider how writing and sharing stories can initiate a sense of groundedness, healing, and empowerment.

Must RSVP in advance by emailing michelle@yellowrage.com

The workshop is open to people of all genders and racial/ethnic backgrounds, but it is geared towards AAPI women and transwomen
