Twelve Philadelphia Area Women Artists Receive June Window of Opportunity Grants

PHILADELPHIA, PA—The Leeway Foundation is pleased to announce the selection of twelve women artists to receive its June 2002 Window of Opportunity (WOO) grants. The grants provide short-term, immediate assistance to individual women artists living in the Philadelphia area who wish to take advantage of specific opportunities that significantly benefit their work or increase its recognition and that would otherwise be financially challenging. Grants totaling $15,874 were awarded to:

Valentine Aprile (Philadelphia county) $1,000
Dance: Performance of choreographed piece at Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Support towards production expenses.

Sondra Blanchard (Philadelphia county) $2,000
Theatre: Performance of solo physical comedy piece at Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Support towards production expenses.

Megan Bridge (Philadelphia county) $1,200
Dance: Presentation of new choreographed work at Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Support towards production expenses.

Tina Davidson (Philadelphia county) $1,000
Music: Creation of compact disc of recent string compositions. Support towards recording, producing and editing expenses.

Lee Ann Etzold (Philadelphia county) $1,200
Performance: Presentation of collaborative comic movement piece at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Support towards production expenses.

Lise Funderburg (Philadelphia county) $1,000
Creative Non-fiction: Research for a work-in-progress to be presented at a reading at Rutgers University. Support towards travel expenses.

Lois Herbine (Montgomery county) $2,000
Music: Completion of a recording for a first solo artist (piccolo) compact disc. Support towards production expenses and musicians' fees.

Gabrielle Mahler (Philadelphia county) $1,000
Film: Preliminary filming for a documentary on the Lenni Lenape Indians. Support towards production expenses.

Colleen Quinn (Philadelphia county) $1,344
Sculpture: Creation and installation of work in a community garden. Support towards materials and installation costs.

Marta Sanchez (Philadelphia county) $900
Painting: Solo exhibition at St. Joseph University. Support towards framing.

Deborah Stein (Philadelphia county) $1,700
Theatre: Participation on a writer's panel at Edinburgh Fringe Festival in conjunction with the production of her play. Support towards travel and accommodations.

Catzie Vilayphonh (Philadelphia county) $1,530
Spoken Word: Performance at the Globalization Research Center's conference on Human Trafficking in Women & Girls. Support towards travel and accommodation.

The Leeway Foundation's Window of Opportunity (WOO) grants support specific, concrete and timely opportunities that have a significant impact on an artist's work, such as an exceptional chance for advanced study with a significant mentor; travel associated with a residency, reading, performance or exhibition; or rental of equipment, or purchase of materials needed to complete a scheduled project. Women artists working in all disciplines are encouraged to apply and may request up to $2,000.

To be eligible for WOO, artists must be female, 20 years of age or older, current, permanent residents of the Philadelphia five county area, and have already secured a commitment from a recognized organization or sponsor for the project for which they are applying. Full time students are not eligible.

In addition to the Window of Opportunity grants, The Leeway Foundation makes awards annually to emerging and established artists in a selected literary or visual arts discipline. 2002 Awards were granted in Photography/ Works On Paper. 2003 awards will be granted in Fiction/Creative Nonfiction.
