Ten Philadelphia Area Women Artists Receive January Window of Opportunity Grants

(Philadelphia, PA) The Leeway Foundation is pleased to announce the selection of ten women artists to receive its January 2002 Window of Opportunity (WOO) grants. The grants provide short term, immediate assistance to individual women artists living in the Philadelphia area who wish to take advantage of specific opportunities that will significantly benefit their work or increase its recognition. Grants totaling $17,460 were awarded to:

Genevieve Coutroubis (Philadelphia county) $781
Photographer: First solo show in an art venue. Exhibition at Boston's Community Music Center. Support towards framing, materials, shipping and transportation.

Gina Kazanicka (Philadelphia county) $2,000
Singer/Songwriter: Recording of debut album. Recording at Indre Studios in Philadelphia. Support towards production expenses.

Martha Kearns (Philadelphia county) $1,875
Playwright: Professionally-staged reading of first full-length work. Reading at Drexel University's Mandell Theatre. Support towards artist honoraria.

Michelle Lipson (Philadelphia county) $1,700
Furniture Maker: Participation in juried exhibition at the Philadelphia Furniture and Furnishings Show. Support towards materials, transportation and booth and promotional expenses.

Malkia Kokuyamba Lydia (Philadelphia county) $2,000
Media Artist: Prime-time broadcast of work on WYBE TV-35 as part of Philadelphia Stories II. Support towards production expenses.

Adelaide Paul (Philadelphia county) $1,822
Sculptor: Solo show at the Clay Studio in collaboration with the Morris Animal Refuge. Support towards materials, installation, shipping and promotional expenses.

Samantha Simpson (Philadelphia county) $1,500
Painter/Digital Artist: First solo exhibition and residency in an alternative art space, Hallwalls in Buffalo, NY. Support towards materials, travel and lodging.

Celeste Starita (Philadelphia county) $1,782
Sculptor: Three month fellowship at the Creative Glass Center of America, allowing for extended work in a fully-equipped hot glass facility. Support towards materials.

Leah Stein (Philadelphia county) $2,000
Dance Artist: Premiere of new work at the Arts Bank. Created in collaboration with poet Josey Foo. Support towards theatre rental and production expenses.

Rebekah Wostrel (Philadelphia county) $2,000
Ceramic Artist: Solo exhibition of sculptural porcelain including an interactive sound sculpture at The Arts Council of Princeton. Support towards materials.

The Leeway Foundation's Window of Opportunity (WOO) grants support specific, concrete and timely opportunities that have a significant impact on an artist's work, such as an exceptional chance for advanced study with a significant mentor; travel associated with a residency, reading, performance or exhibition; or rental of equipment, or purchase of materials needed to complete a scheduled project. Women artists working in all disciplines are encouraged to apply and may request up to $2,000.

To be eligible for WOO, artists must be female, 20 years of age or older, current, permanent residents of the Philadelphia five county area, and have already secured a commitment from a recognized organization or sponsor for the project for which they are applying. Full time students are not eligible.

Founded in 1993, The Leeway Foundation supports individual women artists, arts programs and arts organizations, focusing on the Greater Philadelphia region, in order to help them achieve personal and community transformation. Leeway supports women artists of all backgrounds, traditions, art forms and stages of development. In addition to the Window of Opportunity grants, The Leeway Foundation makes awards annually to Emerging and Established Artists in a selected literary or visual arts discipline. The 2002 awards will be granted in Photography/Works on Paper. The Photography/Works on Paper application deadline is Monday, March 25.
