The Art and Change Grant and the Leeway Transformation Award are open to women and transgender artists living in the Philadelphia region working in any medium of art. Creating change must be integral to the ideas, beliefs, and goals that are woven through the work and the process of creating and sharing the work.
"We decided to call the show See Change because the phrase can be read in so many ways,” says Denise M. Brown, Leeway’s Executive Director. “It could refer to a reversal of opinion or fortune, a shift in one's thinking or way of being, a change of place, or perhaps a change of heart.”
“At Leeway, we hope the artists who we support, not only ‘see change’, but that they make it manifest through their practice,” Brown adds. “These talented photographers are examples of that kind of practice: on the lookout for what's different, what's changing, hoping to capture a moment, perhaps the moment. This show gives us a glimpse what they see through those lens, these final images their vision manifest."
An opening reception for the exhibit will take place from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Thursday May 13. Reservations are requested by May 6. Call 215-563-6417 or email Libby Walsh at lwalsh@philafound.org.
Admission to The Community Art Gallery at The Philadelphia Foundation is free and open to the public from 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday.
“Transformation is the central theme of this exhibit, which is fitting because art itself has the ability to transform lives,” says R. Andrew Swinney, President of The Philadelphia Foundation. “We are pleased to showcase the Leeway Foundation and its impact on making the greater Philadelphia region a better place in which to live.”
The exhibition is the 32nd to be held in the Community Arts Gallery of The Philadelphia Foundation, Southeastern Pennsylvania’s leading center for community philanthropic engagement. The Gallery was established in 2000 as a shared space where local arts organizations, artists and patrons can gather to build greater support for the arts.
The Gallery also highlights the Foundation’s Arts & Culture Fund, a permanent endowment that supports local arts organizations’ efforts to build community through the arts.
The Philadelphia Foundation is committed to improving the quality of life in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties through managing more than 750 charitable funds established by donors.
