Penny Candy Reunion: Places of Power Exhibit

Anula Shetty (LTA ’07, ACG ’15) and Mike Kuetemeyer, SPACES Artist in Residents, teamed up with community residents to create Places of Power, an immersive digital documentary mapping the people who change North Philly for the better. Nandi and Khalid Muhammed, two people profiles in Places of Power are being honored. Nandi and Khalid have run a penny candy store out of their living room for over 15 years, and use candy as a vehicle to teach children counting, Black history, art, and communication skills. They’re remarkable people who foster childhood magic and curiosity on an ordinary North Philly block. The team is throwing a party to welcome back all the kids who grew up with the Penny Candy Store and celebrate Nandi and Khalid’s efforts. The SPACES team will also debut short films, panoramas, and the web-based app created for Places of Power.
The Penny Candy Reunion will be held at the Village of Arts and Humanities (2544 Germantown Avenue) open from 1:00pm – 6:00pm on Saturday, March 5. Please RSVP here.
About SPACES
The SPACES Artist Residency brings artists in residence and community members together to nurture the creation of SPACE — space to create, to dream, to build, and to transform physical landscapes — in North Central Philadelphia.
SPACES Visiting Artists live at The Village of Arts and Humanities rent-free, in a creatively renovated row home. They lead a core team of community members (Neighborhood Artists) to co-design and execute a transformative artistic project that addresses issues of social equity in our community.
