Eight Philadelphia-area Women Artists Receive Leeway's Window of Opportunity Grants
(Philadelphia, PA) The Leeway Foundation is pleased to announce the selection of eight women artists to receive its January 2003 Window of Opportunity (WOO) grants. The grants provide short-term, immediate assistance to individual women artists living in the Philadelphia area who wish to take advantage of specific opportunities that significantly benefit their work or increase its recognition. Grants totaling $10,225 were awarded to:
Won Jung Choi (Philadelphia county) $1,000
Sculpture: Solo outdoor exhibition on natural themes at Michener Art Museum.Support towards materials.
Jessica Dellecave (Philadelphia county) $2,000
Dance/Performance: Production on images of super-heroines at the Community Education Center. Support towards production expenses.
Ruth Naomi Floyd (Philadelphia county)$2,000
Music: Production of a CD of African-American spirituals and jazz. Support towards musician fees and production expenses.
Patricia Goodrich (Bucks county) $600
Sculpture: Exhibition at Russia's Architects Club and Artists Club. Support towards shipping expenses.
Martina Johnson-Allen (Montgomery county) $425
Mixed Media: Solo exhibition of 2-D and 3-D work at Penn State's HUB-Robeson Galleries. Support towards materials and shipping expenses.
Deirdre Murphy (Philadelphia county) $1,200
Painting: Solo exhibition of silk-screen, oil and gouache paintings at Bridgette Mayer Gallery. Support towards frames.
Wendy Univer (Philadelphia county)$2,000
Film/Video: Creation of a short documentary for WYBEs Philadelphia Stories. Support towards post-production expenses.
Paula Winokur (Montgomery county) $1,000
Ceramics: Creation of a catalog for a retrospective at Arcadia University Art Gallery. Support towards production expenses.
The Leeway Foundation's Window of Opportunity (WOO) grants support specific, concrete and timely opportunities that have a significant impact on an artist's work, such as an exceptional chance for advanced study with a significant mentor; travel associated with a residency, reading, performance or exhibition; or rental of equipment, or purchase of materials needed to complete a scheduled project. Women artists working in all disciplines are encouraged to apply and may request up to $2,000.
To be eligible for WOO, artists must be female, 20 years of age or older, current, permanent residents of the Philadelphia five county area, and have already secured a commitment from a recognized organization or sponsor for the project for which they are applying. Full time students are not eligible.
