Benefit Concert to Support Survivors of SouthWest Philadelphia Fire
On July 5, 2014 a tragedy transpired in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in which 8 row homes were gutted by fire resulting in the deaths of 4 children, ages 1 month to 4 years old. Forty individuals were displaced and 10 families were greatly impacted. The Red Cross, the City of Philadelphia, Liberian Association of Pennsylvania, Liberian Ministers Association, African Cultural Alliance of North American, Philadelphia Police and Fire Departments, Christ International Baptist Church, many community leaders, elected officials and the Mayor of Philadelphia, along with many African-American churches, all came together to express their sympathy. All of these organizations and individuals have worked tirelessly to lessen the burden of the impact of this tragic incident. Many people have continued to ask Liberians across the region and the country what they can do to be a part of the healing process. Realizing the enormity of this tragic incident, I’m organizing a musical fundraising event to be held on the street where the fire occurred. A number of additional Liberian artists, as well as other performers, are joining this program.
The event will be held on July 19, 2014, on the 6500 block of Gesner Street, beginning at 2:00pm. This concert will raise funds for impacted victims. One hundred percent of the funds raised and materials gathered will be used for the rehabilitation of the affected families.
