Screening and Artist Talk: Arthur Jafa, Dreams Are Colder Than Death

Scribe Video Center, in partnership with the BlackStar Film Festival, will be hosting a screening and artist talk of Arthur Jafa's Dreams Are Colder Than Death. Jafa will speak about the film on Thursday, July 31 from 12:00pm to 1:30pm at the Scribe Video Center (4212 Chestnut Street), followed by a screening at the Philadelphia International House (3701 Chestnut St.) Filmmaker, cinematographer, intellectual, and visual artist Arthur Jafa has been a visionary in his articulation of a Black aesthetic in cinema. This aesthetic has developed from an understanding of the science of light and sound capture and how that science is connected to culture. During this special presentation, Jafa will talk about the creation of his latest film, Dreams Are Colder Than Death, a project that has allowed him to test his theories of optics, frame rates, motion capture and sensor resolution as technologies that can be shaped to be part of uniquely Black mode of expression.
