Community Forum: Building Trans-Affirming Mental Health Services
The Women’s Therapy Center (WTC) will host a community forum on Building Trans-Affirming Mental Health Services Thursday, May 1 from 6:00pm-8:00pm at the William Way Center (1315 Spruce Street). Please RSVP your attendance to Lee Carson at leecar73@comcast.net by Friday, April 25. Free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
WTC will present their services and process around becoming trans-affirming. They will engage in a dialogue around specific mental health needs for transgender communities. They want to listen to your feedback on our plans and answer questions you may have about our process.
Why? Women’s Therapy Center is a small non-profit that has been around since 1972. They provide individual, couples, and group psychotherapy as well as yoga, psychological testing, and an effective approach to trauma called EMDR. WTC is unique in that it does not limit treatment time, has a wide range of therapy and therapist options, and offers services on a sliding fee scale ranging from $30-$120 per session based on a person’s income. After a long process of exploration, education, dialogue, and community building, WTC recently unanimously voted to honor our mission and communities by working toward providing fully inclusive and affirming services for transgender people. This means that WTC is working towards providing individual, couples, and group psychotherapy for women and transgender communities. They believe that this falls in line with our mission of providing high quality, affordable psychotherapy services in a feminist environment and are fully committed as a board and staff to this growth.
WTC is currently in the process of building our clinical and cultural competency in this area including providing advanced clinical training and supervision; altering our space, forms, and online presence to reflect this shift; increasing trans representation on staff and board; and working with transgender community stake holders to build accountability and transparency.
Part of this effort includes hosting this Community Forum in May of 2014.
